BACH, FAMILY & FRIENDS
Music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philip Emanuel Bach, John Christian Bach and Carl Freidrich Abel.
Johann Sebastian Bach was very proud that he could make up the numbers for a soirée out of his own family – himself and his three eldest sons – Wilhelm Friedemann, Carl Philip Emanuel and Gottfried Bernhard. Promising young gamba player and possible participant was friend of the family Carl Friedrich Abel. Years later, Abel could offer a sign of his high regard for the Bach family by welcoming and accommodating Sebastian’s youngest - Johann Christian - to London, where they went on to form a long and fruitful musical partnership.
Thoroughbass is an Early Music ensemble, who have trouble staying in the past. Established in 2009 by director and harpsichordist Diana Weston, the ensemble often performs contemporary music as well as that of bygone eras. The result is varied, innovative and original repertoire and some fascinating concerts.
‘When you attend a Thoroughbass concert the listener can be assured of two experiences. You will be introduced to some infrequently played compositions spanning all historical music periods, and the intimate setting will allow you to have your hand taken as you walk through the unusual and captivating musical landscape.’ M. Sambell, music educator
Thoroughbass has a number of recordings to their credit. Their latest explores the Bach-Abel partnership, so famous in its time and now being re-discovered with the aid of historic pianos.
